Resting Chiefs fall in finale

PORTLAND – Ty Rattie’s 48th goal of the season kickstarted a three-goal first period and the Portland Winterhawks breezed to a 6-1 victory over the Spokane Chiefs to end the Western Hockey League regular season.

The Chiefs (44-26-2-0) rested six of their top seven scorers with nothing on the line in the finale.

Spokane had already clinched the fourth seed in the West Division and will open the first round of the playoffs by hosting the fifth-seeded Tri-City Americans on Friday night at 7:05.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Chiefs and also ended the six-game winning streak of backup goaltender Garret Hughson.

Markson Bechtold scored his second goal in five games since being called up by the Chiefs. Jacob Cardiff picked up an assist on the score for the first point of his WHL career.

Hughson stopped 33 of 39 shots in the game and finishes the regular season with an 11-6 record.

Six different players scored for top-seeded Portland (57-12-1-2).
