In brief: Meeting tonight on sidewalk projects

From Local Reports

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley will host a public meeting tonight on sidewalk improvement projects planned for Adams Road and Wellesley Avenue.

The meeting will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Trentwood Elementary School, 14701 E. Wellesley Ave.

Plans calls for adding sidewalks and curb ramps to the west side of Adams between Trent and Wellesley avenues, and on the north side of Wellesley between Sullivan and Isenhart roads. There will also be improvements to crosswalks on Wellesley at Moore Road and Isenhart. A Safe Routes to School grant is providing 83.3 percent of the funding for the project, which is expected to start in June and take four weeks to complete.

Residents who attend the meeting will be given information on intersection closures, narrowed lanes, detours and restrictions to driveway access. Call (509) 720-5012 for more information.

Church donates to North Pines

Spokane Valley – For the second year in a row, a Spokane Valley church has made a sizable donation to a nearby middle school.

Intersection Church, 905 N. McDonald Road, held a dinner and auction for Central Valley’s North Pines Middle School on Feb. 16. This year the church raised $11,350 for the school.

Last year, the dinner raised $10,000 which the school used to purchase an electric piano and a new sound system for the gym, along with instructional materials for classrooms.

“We’re very humbled and grateful,” said Principal Gordon Grassi.

Once again, church members honored teachers at the dinner and gave them each a gift card for coffee. Grassi said the teachers will be able to submit applications to him to generate ideas on how to spend the funds, much like applying for a grant. He said ideas for the funds must meet students’ needs in some way.

“We have lots of need,” he said.
