Guns protect speech

I see Bart Haggin (March 10) has another pearl of wisdom.

The Second Amendment gives me the right to own and carry a firearm if I pass a background check. The Old West has nothing to do with it. In fact, he has probably noticed that the world has changed a little since then. The Second Amendment is there for the purpose of allowing us to defend against an overreaching government and to protect our First Amendment rights.

If you don’t think that is a good enough reason, look at New York City. Mayor Michael Bloomberg had, by decree, outlawed large soft drinks because he thinks they are a bad idea. Where does he get that power? A judge said Monday he does not have it. What other things would he and George Soros outlaw if they could? And without the Second Amendment, Haggin wouldn’t have the freedom to speak.
