Change Riverside Avenue

Losing Huppin’s should send a warning to the city. A downtown fixture for over 100 years is closing. Yet, little is done to keep businesses downtown.

The first solution should be Riverside Avenue. It is a shadow of its former self. It used to be packed with people, cars and buses. Now, it’s deserted, and many storefronts are empty. At Christmas time, Riverside used to take a kid’s breath away with all the lights and decorations. Now, it’s dark, dreary and empty.

Take out a lane of traffic in each direction; there’s very little traffic on Riverside anymore. Put in diagonal parking from Monroe to Division. This will double slots available, which could reduce all the driving around and around and around people do looking for parking.

Parking is the number one reason people don’t go downtown, besides there not being much to attract people.
