Chihuly

Renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly will be in Spokane next month in conjunction with an exhibit of his works at Gonzaga University’s Jundt Art Museum.

Chihuly will give a free public lecture at the Bing Crosby Theater, 901 W. Sprague Ave., at 7 p.m. April 25.

Free tickets are available starting Tuesday. A limited number of tickets will be available at the McCarthey Athletic Center box office, 801 N. Cincinnati St., between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. starting Tuesday; limit two tickets per person. Gonzaga University students, faculty and staff can pick up tickets Tuesday at Crosby Student Center; limit two tickets per person.

The Jundt exhibit, “Chihuly: Tradition and Transformation,” will be on display April 5-July 31 in the museum’s Arcade Gallery and will include glass as well as drawings Chihuly created in 1995 as part of a visit to the Gonzaga campus.

Chihuly’s works have been exhibited around the world. A permanent exhibit, “Chihuly Garden and Glass” opened in 2012 at Seattle Center.

Gorge-ous summer

The summer at the Gorge Amphitheatre is beginning to fill up. Last week, three new events were added to the schedule that includes the Sasquatch!, JamBase and Watershed festivals and a two-night stand by Phish.

New on the schedule is Paradiso, June 28-29. It’s a two-day celebration of electronic music that also features, at least according to the promoter’s website, “awe-inspiring theatrical performers, full-size amusement park rides, trampoline acrobats, breathtaking art installations, and so much more.” Paradiso returns to the Gorge for the second year.

And naturally, it wouldn’t be Labor Day weekend without a little Dave Matthews Band. DMB will make its annual Gorge stand Friday, Aug. 30, through Sunday, Sept. 1.

Tickets for both these events are on sale now through livenation.com or all Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.com or (800) 745-3000.

Just announced Friday is a performance by John Mayer, who’s doing his first major tour in three years. He’ll be at the Gorge on July 20. Tickets go on sale Saturday through livenation.com and Ticketmaster.

Futureman cometh

Spokane Falls Community College is selling tickets now for an April 12 performance by Ray “Futureman” Wooten and the Black Mozart Ensemble.

Wooten is a composer and percussionist. He’s won five Grammy Awards and is known as a founding member of Belá Fleck and the Flecktones. His Black Mozart Ensemble features young virtuoso cellists and violinists and they celebrate the work of Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-George, one of the first known European classical musicians to have African ancestry.

Tickets are $15 (adults) and are available at Hoffman Music, 440 W. Sharp Ave.; SFCC Cashiers Office in the SUB, Bldg. 17, or through TicketsWest, (800) 325-SEAT or www.ticketswest.com. Price increases to $18 at the door.

Trumpet winner

Jared Hall, a 2008 graduate of Whitworth University, placed first in the National Trumpet Competition, held earlier this month.

Hall is working on his doctorate at the Henry Mancini Institute of the Frost School of Music in Miami. While at Whitworth, Hall studied trumpet with professor Dan Keberle, director of jazz studies.
