Assault on national forests

The U.S. Forest Service has completed a draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed Four Forest Restoration Initiative in central and northern Arizona and will be accepting public comments until the end of April. The preferred alternative would allow the USFS to commercially log 678 square miles and construct 517 miles of new road, yet the DEIS states the potential environmental impacts are acceptable. Incredibly, the USFS titles this a “Restoration” project.

This single project is the most tragic assault on the national forests for corporate benefit in the history of the agency. If enough Americans voice their opinion, USFS Chief Tom Tidwell might stop this project.

Please call or write Chief Tidwell, Kaibab National Forest Supervisor Mike Williams and/or Coconino National Forest Supervisor M. Earl Stewart. If Chief Tidwell allows this to occur in Arizona, it could also happen in Washington. They need to hear how the 314 million national forest owners feel about this proposal.
