Honors at Central Valley

The Central Valley School Board has honored five people and one group with the Meritorious Service Award, an annual honor for exemplary contributions in support of student achievement in the district.

Certificated employees honored during the board’s Tuesday meeting were Leanne Donley, a teacher at Central Valley High School, and Michelle Schimmels, a teacher at McDonald Elementary School.

Classified employees are Sandi Durrant, the secretary at Broadway Elementary School, and Dawn Faughender, a North Pines Middle School paraeducator.

Roger Lent, the community member honored, is a volunteer at University High School.

The nutrition services team at the Learning and Teaching Center – Jeannette Beatty, Holly Berg, Farrah Johnson and Denice Kwate – was also honored.

There were 79 individuals and 13 teams nominated this year. They were nominated by co-workers, parents and students. Board members publicly recognized each nominee before the awards were given.

Huggable Hero

Katy Dolan, 16, has been named a semifinalist in the 2013 Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes for being a young, social entrepreneur who helps make her community a better place.

The Central Valley High School student co-founded Life Enhancement Through Education and Music (LETEM), a nonprofit organization that collects used musical instruments, repairs and distributes them to low-income music students.

The finalists for the awards will be announced in May and the 10 Huggable Heroes will be named this summer.

Carson Magee, 10, of Coeur d’Alene, is another semifinalist, for his work on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
