TV Notes: ‘Game of Thrones’ resumes

Chuck Barney Mcclatchy-Tribune

Don’t miss

“GAME OF THRONES” – The bloody Battle of Blackwater Bay may be over, but the brutal power plays continue in the third season of still-addictive epic fantasy series. As the saga resumes, the dysfunctional Lannisters maintain their hold on King’s Landing, though new challenges for the Iron Throne may rise up from the most unexpected sources. Meanwhile, keep an eye on Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), whose trio of dragons are growing in bulk and firepower. 9 p.m. Sunday, HBO.

Other bets

SUNDAY: “Call the Midwife” returns for Season 2. That, of course, means more nuns on bikes and more cute little babies. Oh, and there’s also a blossoming romance. 7 p.m. KSPS; 8 p.m., KCDT.

SUNDAY: “The Walking Dead” brings a close to its ultra-intense third season and we have questions: Will the body count go up? Will Andrea (Laurie Holden) survive the torture chamber? Will Michonne (Danai Gurira) ever smile? 9 p.m., AMC.

SUNDAY: Forget Ari Gold. Jeremy Piven takes on a very different character in “Mr. Selfridge,” a grand new offering from “Masterpiece Classic.” Piven plays Harry Gordon Selfridge, the upstart American who built the renowned London department store bearing his name. 9 p.m., KSPS/KCDT.

MONDAY: “General Hospital” reaches a big milestone this week as it celebrates 50 years of soapy shenanigans. One of the week’s highlights includes the fan-favorite event known as the Nurses Ball, complete with a jam session by Rick Springfield. 1 p.m., ABC.

TUESDAY: Lives are on the line as “Justified” closes out its riveting fourth season. Expect a high-stakes showdown between Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) and Detroit mob boss Nicky Augustine (Mike O’ Malley), who is definitely out for blood. 10 p.m., FX.

TUESDAY: Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall may be gone, but “The Game” continues on. And so far, Lauren London and Jay Ellis make for pretty intriguing replacement players in the sexy comedy. 10 p.m., BET.

WEDNESDAY: David Tennant (“Doctor Who”) heads the cast in “Spies of Warsaw.” It’s a thrilling two-part spy drama that finds French and German intelligence operatives locked in a life-and-death struggle during the pre-WWII years. 9 p.m., BBC America.

WEDNESDAY: Thandie Newton (“Crash”) shifts into butt-kicking mode on “Rogue.” It’s a new crime thriller about an undercover detective who gets drawn into a dangerous relationship with an Oakland mob boss. 9 p.m., DirecTV Audience Network.

THURSDAY: “Hannibal” is a suspenseful new drama series that imagines what Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) was like before Anthony Hopkins took on the icy killer in “Silence of the Lambs.” 10:01 p.m., NBC.

FRIDAY: “Vice” is a new weekly newsmagazine that chases down unusual stories all over the globe. Night 1 includes a report on how the Taliban recruit children to be suicide bombers. 11 p.m., HBO.
