Surrogate species: Ashley Chance carries a 3-month-old western lowland gorilla named Gladys in the outdoor gorilla exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo on Tuesday, the day of her media debut. The baby gorilla was born Jan. 29 at a Texas zoo to a first-time mother who wouldn’t care for her. Zoo workers and volunteers are acting as surrogate mothers to prepare the baby to be introduced to a female gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo who might accept her. Humans acting as surrogate mothers wear vests and materials to make them appear more like a gorilla. (Associated Press)
