Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with De Leon Foods on Sunday.

The Mexican deli and grocery will host a fiesta in the parking lot of the store, 102 E. Francis Ave., from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. There is no cover charge and the party will include food specials, a beer garden, a mariachi band, vendors, piñata breaking, jumping castle and folklorico dancers.

Lentil Festival seeking recipes

It’s time to start perfecting those lentil recipes. Entries for the Legendary Lentil Festival Cook-off must be submitted or postmarked by June 17. This year will mark the 25th anniversary of the National Lentil Festival Cook-off. It will be Aug. 16 and 17 in Pullman.

All recipes must contain at least 1/2 cup of dried lentils or 1 cup cooked lentils and no more than 15 ingredients.

The top five finalists will be invited to make their recipes at the festival this year. The first place winner receives $2,000. Second place is awarded $1,000 and third place receives $500.

Farmers markets set to open soon

Two of the area’s largest farmers markets have announced opening dates. The Spokane and Kootenai County farmers markets will kick off the season May 11.
