U-Hi claims second seed to soccer subregional

University scored twice in the second half and claimed the second seed to the subregional tournament with a 2-0 win over Mt. Spokane Friday in a District 8 3A soccer match at Spokane Falls CC.

Kyle Bender’s header off a cross from Chris Donich in the 53rd minute gave the Titans a 1-0 lead. Marcelo Morales snuck through the defense and scored in the final minutes to cap the scoring.

University keeper Quinn Howe and Wildcats keeper Robert Powles each made 10 saves.

Mt. Spokane earned the third seed and will play at Hanford on Tuesday.

University will play Kamiakin on Tuesday at SFCC.

District 8 4A

Lewis and Clark overcame an early 1-0 deficit with two second-half goals and beat Central Valley 2-1 at SFCC.

LC’s Ben Thompson scored off a deflection in the 53rd minute to knot the contest at 1. A minute later, Connor Gu scored off an assist from Thompson in what turned out to be the match-winner.

Brian Choate opened the scoring for the Bears with a 17th-minute goal from about 25 yards out.

The Tigers earned a spot in regionals while the Bears’ season concluded.
