Prep roundup: Cheney, EV in district title match

Ian Schimandel scored two second-half goals and top-seeded Cheney blanked West Valley 3-0 in the semifinals of the District 7 2A boys soccer tournament Saturday afternoon at Cheney.

Schimandel opened the scoring in the 41st minute off an assist from Nick Steele.

Steele then scored seven minutes later off a Trevan Estrellado assist. Schimandel capped the scoring in the 50th minute.

The Eagles were eliminated.

The Blackhawks will host East Valley Tuesday in the district championship. The match will determine seeding to regionals.

Second-seeded East Valley advanced with a 2-0 win over Pullman at Gonzaga Prep.

Hartvig Bondo and Kane Heaton scored second-half goals for the Knights.

Pullman’s season came to a close.

1A Bi-District

Lakeside and Medical Lake were eliminated after losing matches in Wenatchee.

Lakeside fell 3-1 to Okanogan and Medical Lake was blanked 6-0 by Quincy.

Baseball

Moscow scored eight runs in the final two innings and upset top-seeded Lakeland 9-3 in a 4A Region I game in Rathdrum.

Pat O’Sullivan, Jared Paul and Nolan Johnson all hit home runs for the Bears.

Moscow, which beat Sandpoint 15-5 in five innings earlier in the day, will play next Saturday for a state berth.

Lakeland will host Sandpoint on Tuesday in a loser-out game.
