GU’s Olson earns pitching honor

Gonzaga senior pitcher Tyler Olson was named the Rawlings West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Month for April on Tuesday.

Olson was 4-0 during the month with a 0.52 earned run average. He had three complete games, including a complete-game shutout.

For the season, Olson is 9-2 with a 2.17 earned-run average and five complete games.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the WCC regular-season title with a sweep over Santa Clara last weekend.

Men’s basketball

Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar announced that T.J. Otzelberger has joined the staff as an assistant coach.

Otzelberger was an assistant at Iowa State for seven seasons and was the associate head coach for the Cyclones since 2010.

Women’s basketball

Washington State freshman guard Lia Galdeira was selected to attend the 2013 National Team Trials to try out for the FIBA U19 World Championship Team.

The tryouts will be held May 16-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Galdeira, who earned All-Pac-12 Conference honorable mention honors, is one of 34 players selected to try out for the team.

• Former Gonzaga player Janelle Bekkering and Emma Wolfram, who has committed to attend Gonzaga and play for the Bulldogs next year, have been invited to try out for Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team.

The tryouts will be held May 17-19 at McMaster University’s David Braley Athletic Centre in Hamilton, Ontario.

Men’s golf

University of Washington’s Chris Williams (Moscow, Idaho) was named to the Pac-12 Conference All-Conference first team for the third time. It was the fourth time Williams has earned all-conference recognition.

He was named to the second team as a freshman and the first team for the next three years.
