‘Once Upon a Mattress’ adds music to classic fairy tale

The classic tale of “The Princess and the Pea” receives a twist in the musical “Once Upon a Mattress,” presented by the drama department at West Valley High School.

In a land far away, a king has been cursed, causing him to lose his voice. His wife has taken control of the kingdom and is determined to keep her son from getting married.

The queen declares that only a princess may marry him, and no one else in the kingdom can marry until the prince does.

A noble knight desperate to marry his lady finds an awkward princess to fall in love with the prince and meet the approval of the queen in this retelling of the fairy tale.

The cast: Sydney Wallingford as Winnifred the Woebegone; Noah Berndt as Prince Dauntless the Drab; Allison Price as Queen Aggravain; Colton Long as King Sextimus; Emily Vermillion as Lady Larkin; Samuel Estabrooks as Sir Harry; Adam Maddox as the minstrel; Cindy Kunz as the Wizard; and Katie Wee as the jester.

The knights and ladies are Kamara Berland, Stephanie Biviano, Allison Black, Taylor Cummings, Shian Fenstermaker, Lexi Forster, Gail Gallaher, Sierra Geaudreau, Allie Highberg, Hanna Highberg, Macey Howe, Arden Leas, Grace Leeberg, Ashley Maddox, Shaley Martin, Brianna McGarry, Kristin Norman, Micelli Olmstead, Ellen Postlewait, Madelyn Stiles, Shannon Brandvold, Daphne Layman, Haley Ryan and Wyatt Kittilstved.

The technical crew members are: stage manager, Morgan Ott, stage manager, Brianna Stansberry, Kristy Mitchell, Ana Jopson and Dakota Gramlow.

David Leinweber is the technical director, Mary Pat King is the art director and Karen Hawkings and Shar Steele are the music directors.

Jodee Cahalan, Lexi Forster and Katie Wee are the choreographers.

The play is directed by Delvone Bullis.
