Organizers: St. Joe jet-boat race back on

“Race the Joe,” a jet-boat race on the St. Joe River that drew thousands of spectators last spring, is back on after a pulled permit last Friday made it questionable for this year. Spokeswoman Kyla Sawyer announced this afternoon that the U.S. Coast Guard had told the event committee it will issue the permit required for the race to go on May 17-19 on the St. Joe River near St. Maries. The Idaho congressional delegation and Gov. Butch Otter had requested that the Coast Guard reconsider its decision not to issue a permit for the event after concerns arose about the effect of the race on nesting bald eagles along the river.
