Artist receiving Capitol honor

Kaitlyn Sabie, a junior at East Valley High School, has won first place, Judges Award and the Washington State Governor’s Award at the OSPI All-State High School Art Show for her pastel drawing, “The Prince.”

The drawing was inspired by summers spent at the lake and features a child holding a frog in his hand.

Sabie and her family will attend a reception at the Old Capitol Building in Olympia on May 17.

Another of Sabie’s artworks has won first place in the U.S. Congressional Art Show. The piece is a portrait of her with her younger brother.

She received a congratulatory call from Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers and the piece will be exhibited at the U.S. Capitol Cannon Tunnel for one year, representing the 5th Congressional District. The Sabie family will be McMorris Rodgers’ guests at a reception in Washington, D.C., in June.

Freeman Art and Soul

The art department at Freeman High School, 14626 S. Jackson Road, Rockford, will present its third annual Art and Soul festival Thursday from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Painter Ric Gendron and printmaker/photographer Carl Richardson will give demonstrations and there will be an art sale of original work and prints of Harold Balazs, Mel McCuddin, Ken Spiering and Freeman art students.

The evening will include live music and an art show of student watercolors, acrylic paintings, linoleum block prints and plaster carvings.

The public will be invited to participate in creating a large collaborative acrylic painting.

Children will be invited to try chocolate pudding finger painting and there will be food, coffee and beverages.

The cost to attend is $4 per person or $12 per family.
