Say no to Redskins

Once again I must say how repulsed I am at how people can support a totally offensive and racist name as “Redskins” to be used for a professional sports team (May 3).

Now, at a time when most of us accept a gay person in major men’s sports, when a black is elected president and blacks are elected officials in the south, when gays and lesbians can now marry in some states, I ask how is it possible, in an enlightened society, that the “Redskins” name should not be changed?

I don’t believe Washington owner Dan Snyder would call any of his players by the N-word, which is no less racist that Redskins. It is time for all minorities who have heard or been called hateful names to stand up and express to the clueless around us that we owe the Native Americans enough respect, and I do mean respect, to stop using all the hurtful names and give our Native Americans enough respect, and I do mean respect, to stop using all the hurtful names our Native Americans have had to hear over the years.

Don’t let racism and ignorance stand in the way of what is right. If Mr. Snyder wanted to change the name he could and should.

Mr. Snyder, the Washington Bullets managed to change their inappropriate and disgusting name, why can’t you?
