Fans’ racist chants briefly hault soccer match

Mon., May 13, 2013, midnight

The Serie A match between AC Milan and Roma was briefly suspended Sunday because of racist chanting directed at Italian forward Mario Balotelli (pictured) by the visiting Roma fans. Play was halted for approximately a minute-and-a-half in the second half at San Siro to allow Roma captain Francesco Totti to gesture to his team’s fans to cease and desist. There already had been incidents of racist chanting in the first half, and fans were warned over the speaker system that the game could be suspended. The match ended in a scoreless draw. Milan attacker Kevin-Prince Boateng walked off the field with teammates in January after enduring racist abuse during an exhibition against a fourth-tier Italian club. – Associated Press
