Costliest States for Car Insurance

Jim Gorzelany CTW Features
Motorists living in Louisiana can be expected to pay the most among Americans to obtain car insurance at an annual average of $2,699, as determined by a study conducted for Insure.com in Foster City, Calif. According to editorial director Amy Danise, rates tend to be the highest in the Pelican State largely because of the high number of bodily injury claims filed each year and the fact that accident lawsuits for less than $50,000 go before elected judges, who more often side with consumers than insurance companies. Other states that have the highest average rates in the nation include Michigan (at $2,520), Georgia ($2,155), Oklahoma ($2,074) and Washington, D.C. ($2,006). Meanwhile, drivers in Maine enjoy open roads because of relatively low traffic density, and as a result they’re granted the lowest annual average car insurance rates in the nation at an affordable $934. Rounding out the five least-expensive states in which to insure a car are Iowa (at $1,028), North Carolina ($1,085), Ohio ($1,106) and New Hampshire ($1,112).
