Berdych upsets Djokovic at Italian Open
Tennis: Less than 10 days away from the French Open, top-ranked Novak Djokovic wasted a chance to serve out the match and was beaten 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 by sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych in the Italian Open quarterfinals in Rome on Friday.
In the semifinals, Berdych will face six-time Rome champion Rafael Nadal, who defeated fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
It was the second straight early exit for Djokovic.
In the other half of the draw, Roger Federer overcame an early break in the second set to edge rising Polish player Jerzy Janowicz 6-4, 7-6 (2).
Federer will play Benoit Paire, the 36th-ranked Frenchman who routed Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-1, 6-0.
For the women, top-ranked Serena Williams rolled past Spanish opponent Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-0. Williams will face Romanian qualifier Simona Halep, who rallied past two-time Rome champion Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.
Two-time defending champion Maria Sharapova withdrew before her quarterfinal against Sara Errani due to illness.
London wins opener of Memorial Cup
Hockey: The London Knights were 3-2 winners over the Saskatoon Blades in the opening game of the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament in Saskatoon, Sask.
Nikita Zadorov broke a 2-2 tie with a power-play marker 5:45 into the third period.
Cavendish wins longest stage of Giro
Cycling: Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory in the 13th and longest stage of the Giro d’Italia, finishing in 6 hours, 9 minutes, 55 seconds. Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali maintained a 41-second overall lead.
Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins and defending champion Ryder Hesjedal withdrew before the stage.
• Garderen extends Tour of California lead: Tejay van Garderen raced to a dominating individual time trial victory in the Tour of California to extend his overall lead over Australian Michael Rogers.
Van Garderen, the 24-year-old BMC rider who grew up in Bozeman, completed the 19.6-mile route in San Jose, Calif., in 48 minutes, 49 seconds.
Bradley maintains lead at Byron Nelson
Golf: After setting a course record in the first round of the Byron Nelson Championship in Irving, Texas, Keegan Bradley started and ended his second round with bogeys on Nos. 1 and 18, part of a 1-under 69 that got him to 11-under 129, enough for a three-stroke lead and the lowest 36-hole total at the Nelson since 2001.
Tom Gillis, who shot 63 in the first group of the day off the No. 10 tee, and Sang-Moon Bae (66) were tied for second.
• Poulter eliminated: Ian Poulter lost to Thomas Aiken, 1 up, when he bogeyed the last hole, eliminating him from the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Kavarna, Bulgaria. Only 16 remain, including a pairing of Graeme McDowell and Bo Van Pelt.
• Korda grabs one-stroke lead over Webb: Jessica Korda shot a 7-under 65 for a total of 131 to take a one-stroke lead over Hall of Famer Karrie Webb after the second round of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic in Mobile, Ala.
Kim Welch, a former WSU golfer, shot a 67 and was tied for 15th at 7-under 137. Edwall, Wash., resident Wendy Ward fired a 70 and was 2 under. Ex-University of Idaho golfer Kayla Montellaro shot a 73, was 6 over and missed the cut.
Atletico tops Real to win Copa del Rey
Soccer: Atletico Madrid ended a 25-game, 14-year winless streak against rival Real Madrid, getting a 98th-minute goal from Miranda for a 2-1 victory in the Copa del Rey final in Madrid, following the ejections of Real star Cristiano Ronaldo and coach Jose Mourinho.
Ronaldo put Madrid ahead in the 14th minute with a header, his 54th goal of the season, but Atletico tied the score in the 35th minute when Radamel Falcao set up Diego Costa.
Unbeaten Povetkin retains WBA belt
Boxing: Unbeaten Alexander Povetkin retained his WBA heavyweight belt in Moscow, stopping Polish challenger Andrzej Wawrzyk in the third round for his fourth successful title defense.
