Whitworth’s Guthrie 12th at NCAAs

Whitworth senior Emily Guthrie shot a 9-over 81 and finished tied for 12th with a four-round total of 314 at the NCAA Division III women’s golf championships Friday at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla.

Starting on the back nine, Guthrie opened the fourth round with a triple bogey on the tenth hole. She finished the round with a bogey and double bogey on her final two holes.

Guthrie was 20th at the championships last year.

Mary Hardin-Baylor won the team title at 1,239 and Texas-Tyler’s Laura Lindsey claimed the individual championship at 8-over 296.

Men’s golf

Washington’s Chris Williams (Moscow, Idaho) shot a 1-under 71 and the Huskies moved into second place after the second round of the NCAA regional in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Huskies have a two-round total of 25-under 551, two strokes behind North Florida.

Williams’ teammate, Charlie Hughes, carded a 7-under 65. Cheng-Tsung Pan leads UW at 134, good for second place. Williams is tied for 13th at 139.

The tournament concludes today. The top five teams in each of the six regional sites advance to the NCAA championships May 28-June 2 in Atlanta.

• In the Pullman regional at Palouse Ridge Golf Course, California shot a 276 in the second round to increase its lead to 11 strokes over Southern California.

USC’s Sam Smith posted the best round for the second straight day. He shot a 64 and is 18-under par at 126 with a six-stroke lead.

Softball

Community Colleges of Spokane lost to top-seeded Mt. Hood after opening the NWAACC championships at Delta Park in Portland with a win over No. 8 seed Pierce.

The ninth-seeded Sasquatch (27-17) beat Pierce (27-18) 10-3 thanks to a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning. Amanda Hamilton led off the inning with a solo home run. She finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Lindsey Walchli earned the win after giving up three runs on four hits in seven innings.

CCS fell to Mt. Hood (38-5) 8-2 later in the day. Tiffany Joyce went 3 for 3 with a double to lead the Sasquatch.

CCS will play Grays Harbor (18-21) today.

The Sasquatch will need to win their next five games to move through the loser’s bracket and into Monday’s title game.

• Despite getting only one hit, Washington (38-14) topped Portland State 2-1 in the opener of the NCAA regional in Seattle.

The Huskies benefited from two Portland State (25-30) errors and six walks.

Washington’s Bryana Walker pitched all seven innings, allowing a run on three hits while striking out 13.

The Huskies play Hawaii today.
