Memorial Day events

Greenwood Memorial Terrace - Saturday through Monday. Small American flags handed out daily and assistance provided in finding specific graves. Brass Patriotic Band Concert on the top of Greenwood by the Cross of Inspiration on Sunday at 6 p.m. Greenwood Memorial Terrace Cemetery, 211 N. Government Way. (509) 838-1405.

Heritage Funeral Home and Crematory - Saturday through Monday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Honoring veterans living and dead. Bring in a military photo (veteran, deceased or currently serving) to place on the Wall of Honor. Musical entertainment with popular songs from the Korean and Vietnam war eras – “From Inchon to Saigon” – presented each day at noon and 1:30 p.m. in the Heritage Chapel. Displays of veterans’ memorabilia, antique and classic cars and Tree of Remembrance. Refreshments in the Heritage reception room. Heritage Funeral Home and Crematory, 508 N. Government Way. The American Legion Post 14 Memorial Weekend Perk Up - Daily through Wednesday. The Coeur d’Alene American Legion Post 14 will be offering coffee and donuts at the westbound Interstate 90 Huetter Rest Area. Travelers going west can stop by for a cup of coffee, a donut and some friendly conversation each day from 6 a.m. to dark. Huetter Rest Area, westbound Interstate 90, Huetter. Free.

15th Annual Battle of Deep Creek - Saturday through Monday. Come and see for yourself the most turbulent times our country has ever endured – the American Civil War. Hear the crash and boom of the artillery. Feel the weight of the rifles and packs that the soldiers carried, and learn some of the tactics of the day. Meet the fine ladies in their gorgeous dresses. Watch as battles are reenacted, and honor the 700,000 men who fell. Bring earplugs (it gets loud); bring water bottles as spigots are provided; onsite food vendors, limited battle seating, wear sturdy footwear. Hours are Saturday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Monday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday events: 9:30 a.m., Confederate Morning Parade; 9:30 a.m., Church (Sunday only); 10:15 a.m., Federal Morning Parade; 11 a.m., Morning Battle; Noon, Artillery Demo; 12:30 p.m., Medical Demo; 1 p.m., Small Arms Demo; 2:30 p.m., Cavalry Demo; 3 p.m., Afternoon Battle; 4 p.m., Medical Demo; 5 p.m., Camp Closes. Ceremony Honoring Fallen Service Members - The monument features an American flag that will be lit 24 hours a day, a memorial plaque and benches for visitors. The names of soldiers with local connections killed in action since Sept. 11, 2001, have a special place on the monument. Sunday, 12:30-1 p.m., Valley Fourth Memorial Church, 2303 S. Liberty Lake Community Memorial Day Salute and Breakfast - Presented by Liberty Lake Centennial Rotary Club. Funds raised at this event will support Honor Flight. Breakfast served 8-10 a.m. A short program featuring color guard/musical program will be at 9 a.m. All you-can-eat pancakes, ham, eggs and coffee. Veterans eat free. Monday, Pavillion Park, 727 N. Free Museum Admission for Military Families – Active-duty military members and their families are invited to enjoy free admission to over 1,800 Blue Star museums across America from Monday through Sept. 2. Participating local museums include: Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, 2316 W. Hayden Memorial Day Ceremonies - Laying of the Wreath Ceremony and Tolling of the Boats at 10 a.m. at Honeysuckle Beach includes prayer, rifle salute and taps to honor military personnel lost at sea. Memorial Ceremony follows from 11 a.m.-noon and includes presentation of colors, guest speaker Master Sgt. Curley Lawson, bagpipe tribute and national anthem, rifle salute, taps and retiring of colors. Monday, Hayden City Hall, 8930 N. Government Way, Hayden. (208) 209-1080.

Washington State Veterans Cemetery - Medical Lake - Program is outdoors and seating is limited, so bring a blanket or chair. Overflow parking will be available along Ritchey Road. Memorial Day Service - Hillyard - Presented by Hillyard VFW Post #1474 and Ladies Auxiliary. Ceremony will take about 20 minutes, and then members of the cemetery association will be available to assist members of the public to locate graves of known relatives buried there.
