In brief: Medical plane crash kills three people

From Wire Reports

EPHRATAH, N.Y. – The three people on board a volunteer medical flight that crashed in central New York on Friday were a 64-year-old cancer patient, his wife and a pilot from Connecticut.

The daughter of 58-year-old Evelyn Amerosa said Sunday her mother was on the Angel Flight with her husband, Frank, when it crashed in Ephratah, about an hour outside Albany.

The daughter of John Campbell, of Stamford, Conn., said her father was the pilot.

The bodies of Campbell and Evelyn Amerosa have been recovered.

One dead, 10 hurt as car, bus collide

SAN FRANCISCO – A car whose driver had been drinking crashed with a party bus on a San Francisco Bay Area bridge Sunday, leaving the driver critically injured, his wife dead and nine others hospitalized with minor-to-moderate injuries, authorities said.

A red Honda coupe driven by 43-year-old Raul Padilla appeared to have slammed into the center divider of U.S. 101 before it came to a stop facing oncoming traffic, California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel said.

After the Honda stopped, the front end of the party bus, which had 18 people on board, hit the disabled car. Two other cars were also involved in the collision.

“We’re still trying to figure out who came into contact with what,” Montiel said.

The woman killed was a 36-year-old passenger in the Honda and married to Padilla. Her name has not been released while officials try to contact other family members.

Breast cancer kills Jolie’s aunt at 61

ESCONDIDO, Calif. – Less than two weeks after Angelina Jolie revealed she’d had a double mastectomy to avoid breast cancer, her aunt died from the disease Sunday.

Debbie Martin died at age 61 at a hospital in Escondido, Calif., near San Diego, her husband, Ron Martin, told the Associated Press.

Debbie Martin was the younger sister of Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, whose own death from ovarian cancer in 2007 inspired the surgery that Jolie described in a May 14 New York Times column.

According to her husband, Debbie Martin had the same defective BRCA1 gene that Jolie does, but didn’t know it until after her 2004 cancer diagnosis.
