In brief: Local students shine at state pageant

SPOKANE – Miss Spokane’s Outstanding Teen Joy Davis, a freshman at Ferris High School, won the fitness award at the Miss Washington Outstanding Teen Pageant during the Memorial Day weekend.

Miss Inland Empire’s Outstanding Teen, Aitanna Ferrez, a sophomore at Gonzaga Prep, won the Four Points Crown Award which recognizes service, scholarship, success and style.

Miss Spokane Valley’s Outstanding Teen Julia Jean Brown, a junior at Gonzaga Prep, won two awards: Miss Congeniality and the Top Overall Interview Award. She was also a finalist for the Teens in Action Award.

Puget Sound’s Miss Outstanding Teen Haley Downey won the Miss Washington Outstanding Teen and will compete for the national award in August in Orlando, Fla.

ChalkArt open to all ages, abilities

HILLYARD – The annual ChalkArtWalk takes place on the sidewalks of the Hillyard Historic Business District on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

ChalkArtWalk is a free sidewalk chalk drawing contest open to all ages and abilities. Bring sidewalk chalk (no paint or oil-based pastels allowed) and produce a drawing that best illustrates this year’s theme: Tolerance.

Drawing stops at 3 p.m., and first, second and third prizes consisting of cash and merchandise are awarded in each of the five age groups.

Chalk is available for free at the registration booth on the corner of Market Street and Queen Avenue.
