Education Notebook: Shadle team wins state math-science contest
Hailey Guyette, Kleopatra Deltchev and Jessica Lim, the Spokane MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) Prosthetic Arm Challenge team from Shadle Park High School, won first place at Washington MESA Day.
The competition was May 17 and 18 at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Wash.
The team will represent Washington at the national competition in Portland in June.
‘Closing Night’ ends LC drama season
Lewis and Clark Tiger Drama will present its final performance of the season tonight at 7 p.m. in the LC auditorium.
“Closing Night” will feature performances from all aspects of the Tiger Drama department and will also include entertainment from LC’s seniors. Admission to the show is free, but donations will be accepted.
Groundbreaking set at Finch Elementary
There will be a groundbreaking ceremony at Finch Elementary School on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
The event will include a short presentation before the ceremonial first shovels of dirt will be thrown to begin the school’s renovation project. The renovation was approved when Spokane residents passed the 2009 school bond and is among rebuilding or modernizations of Jefferson, Hutton and Westview elementary schools, a new gymnasium at Salk Middle School, modernization of Ferris and an addition to North Central.
The districtwide plan, totaling $332 million, also allowed for playground and field improvements and safety, security and technology updates at all schools in the Spokane Public Schools District.
Drama students nominated
LC’s Tiger Drama, along with drama students at Liberty and University high schools have been nominated for the annual 5th Avenue Awards.
Lewis and Clark was nominated for two productions.
For “The Little Mermaid,” Keyonna Knight as Ursula, was nominated for outstanding performance by an actress in a supporting role.
For “In the Heights,” the production was nominated for overall musical, direction, choreography, lighting design, stage crew, lobby display, as well as honorable mentions for music direction and scenic design.
Danny Palomba as was nominated for outstanding performance by an actor in a leading role for his portrayal of Usnavi. Bradley Duffy was nominated for outstanding performance by an actor in a featured ensemble role for his portrayal of Piragua Guy. Honorable mentions for performance by an actress in a featured ensemble role went to Vanessa Butler as Camila and Madison Rasmussen as Daniela. An honorable mention for performance by an actor in a featured ensemble role went to Kale Dotson as Kevin Rosario.
University High School received nominations for its production of “Urinetown” for direction, music direction, choreography, scenic design, lighting design, costume design, hair and makeup design, stage crew, performance by a chorus and performance by an ensemble group. Shelby Horton, as Hope Cladwell, was nominated for outstanding performance by an actress in a leading role. Aubree Peterson, as Little Sally, was nominated for outstanding performance by an actress in a supporting role. Mathias Oliver as Hot Blades Harry was nominated for outstanding performance by an actor in a featured ensemble role.
Liberty High School was nominated for its production of “The Wizard of Oz” for overall musical, direction, music direction, choreography, scenic design, lighting design, stage crew and lobby display. Madison Smith, as the Wicked Witch, was nominated for outstanding performance by an actor or actress in a nonsinging role. Eric Spradling-Reim as the Scarecrow received an honorable mention for outstanding performance by an actor in a supporting role.
Every year, evaluators from the 5th Avenue Theatre attend musical theater productions at high schools throughout the state to recognize the most outstanding productions and individuals.
The winners will be announced during a ceremony at the theater in Seattle on June 11.
