Suspended NASCAR indefinitely suspended the Richard Childress Racing crew member who threw a hammer at driver Kevin Harvick’s truck during a race at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Va. Ty Dillon spun Harvick late in Saturday’s race as both were racing for position. Harvick hit Dillon’s truck under caution, then drove into Dillon’s pit stall as he returned to pit road. Adam Brown then threw the hammer at the truck.
Exercised The Kansas City Royals exercised their $13.5 million option on right-hander James Shields for 2014 after he anchored one of the league’s best starting rotations last season. Shields, acquired last offseason in a trade from Tampa Bay, went 13-9 with a 3.15 ERA and an A.L.-leading 228 2/3 innings.
Declined D.C. United declined its contract option on midfielder Dwayne De Rosario, two years after he was the leading scorer and MVP of Major League Soccer. De Rosario leaves United after 23 goals and 21 assists in 68 games. .
Lost Incoming freshman Isaac Hamilton lost his appeal to void the national letter of intent he signed with UTEP, so he won’t be allowed to play for No. 22 UCLA this season. The school said Hamilton will be allowed to practice with the Bruins this season, and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Retired The Columbus Crew announced midfielder Eddie Gaven is retiring after 11 seasons in Major League Soccer. The 27-year-old concludes a career that includes 278 appearances, 51 goals and 37 assists in MLS regular-season competition.
Hired Former All-Star third baseman Kevin Seitzer was hired as hitting coach of the Toronto Blue Jays. Seitzer replaces Chad Mottola.
