Obituary: Shearer, Emmett James

SHEARER, Emmett James (Age 86) Emmett passed away suddenly on October 24, 2013.

He was watching the World Series with his son and his grandchild play on the floor, when he passed from this life to God’s Field of Dreams.

Emmett had a long and productive life.

Educated by the Jesuits from Gonzaga High School, through Gonzaga University and the School of Law, he was a man of deep faith and service to others.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1944-46.

Upon his return, he followed his father and brothers into a railroad career, where he spent 26 years.

He practiced law in the private and public sectors, including time with Washington Trust Bank, private practice, and the City and County of Spokane.

He was honored in 2005 by the Spokane County Bar Association for 50 years in the legal profession.

He married Ramona Gainor in 1954.

Their family quickly grew to six children: Marietta, Emmett, Patrick, Kevin, Kelly, and Elizabeth.

Their house was a gathering place for neighborhood activities, food, and fun.

Emmett is survived by his six children and their families, which include numerous grandchildren and a couple great-grandchildren.

He will be fondly remembered by scores of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Ramona, and his siblings.

A vigil service will be held on November 3 at 7 pm and the Funeral Mass on November 4 at 10 am.

Both services will take place at St. Charles Parish, where Emmett was a long time member, contributing to the parish and various Catholic Organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus and the Serra Club.
