Fighting Irish hold off feisty Midshipmen

Tarean Folston scored on a 1-yard plunge with 3:47 left and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-2) survived a back-and-forth game with Navy (4-4), holding on to beat the Midshipmen 38-34 Saturday in South Bend, Ind.

Navy had a chance to score late in the fourth quarter, but a bad pitch by Keenan Reynolds led to a 10-yard loss. Then on fourth-and-4 from the Notre Dame 31, Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith stopped an end-around by Shawn Lynch for no gain as the Irish avoided losing to Navy for the third time in five seasons.

Tommy Rees threw touchdown passes to TJ Jones and Ben Koyack. George Atkinson III scored on a 41-yard run and Cam McDaniel added a TD run.

Reynolds rushed for three TDs and passed for another for Navy.

Boise State 42, Colorado State 30: Grant Hedrick scorched the Rams (4-5, 2-2 Mountain West) secondary for five passing TDs and 305 yards to lead the Broncos (6-3, 4-1) to a victory in Fort Collins, Colo.

Boston College 34, Virginia Tech 27: Linebacker Kevin Pierre-Lewis had a 33-yard interception return for a TD midway through the fourth quarter and Andre Williams ran for a pair of scores, lifting the Eagles (4-4, 2-3 ACC) over the Hokies (6-3, 3-2) in Boston.

Penn State 24, Illinois 17 (OT): Christian Hackenberg hit Kyle Carter with a 15-yard TD pass in overtime and Ryan Keiser sealed the win with an end zone interception, lifting the Nittany Lions (5-3, 2-2 Big Ten) over the visiting Illini (3-5, 0-4).

Air Force 42, Army 28: Anthony LaCoste rushed for a career-high 263 yards and scored three TDs to help the Falcons (2-7) snap a seven-game skid by beating the visiting Black Knights (3-6).

Texas 35, Kansas 13: Malcolm Brown ran for 119 yards and four TDs to power the Longhorns (6-2, 5-0 Big 12) over the Jayhawks (2-6, 0-5) in Austin, Texas.

West Virginia 30, TCU 27 (OT): Charles Sims rushed for a season-high 154 yards and Josh Lambert hit a 35-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Mountaineers (4-5, 2-4 Big 12) over the host Horned Frogs (3-6, 1-5).

Minnesota 42, Indiana 39: Philip Nelson passed for 298 yards and four TDs and Aaron Hill recovered a fumble by Indiana’s Tevin Coleman with 25 seconds left as the Golden Gophers (7-2, 3-2 Big Ten) beat the Hoosiers (3-5, 1-3) in Bloomington, Ind., for their third straight win.

San Jose State 34, UNLV 24: Jarrod Lawson ran for a career-high 187 yards and a TD as the Spartans (5-3, 4-1 Mountain West) topped the Rebels (5-4, 3-2) in Las Vegas.
