In brief: Afghan police, NATO soldier killed

KABUL, Afghanistan – NATO says a foreign soldier has been killed in an attack in eastern Afghanistan, while officials say two officers have been killed in separate shootings.

A NATO statement said the soldier was shot dead Sunday. It did not say where the shooting happened, nor did it give the nationality of the soldier killed in the attack.

In southern Uruzgan province, a police spokesman said insurgents attacked a police checkpoint in the Dehrawod district Sunday morning. The spokesman said one officer and four insurgents were killed in the attack.

In southern Kandahar city, governor’s spokesman Javed Faisel said a police officer was shot and killed by two gunmen riding a motorbike.

Ousted M23 rebels call for cease-fire

GOMA, Congo – A leader of the M23 rebels who were forced to retreat from most of their strongholds in eastern Congo is now calling for a cease-fire.

In a statement released Sunday, M23 president Bertrand Bisimwa called on his fighters to put down their weapons, and urged the Congolese military to cease all hostilities to allow peace talks to go forward.

Gunmen kill groom, 30 others in convoy

YOLA, Nigeria – A government spokesman said suspected Islamic militants attacked a wedding convoy in northeast Nigeria and killed more than 30 people, including the groom.

Adamawa state spokesman Ahmad Sajoh said the wedding ceremony had taken place in neighboring Borno state and the groom and guests were driving home to Adamawa when they were attacked Saturday on the highway between Bama and Gwoza towns in Borno.

Boat carrying 70 sinks off Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar – A boat carrying at least 70 Muslim Rohingya capsized and sank Sunday off the western coast of Myanmar, an aid worker said. Only eight survivors have been found.

The boat was in the Bay of Bengal and headed for Bangladesh when it went down early Sunday, said Abdul Melik, who works for a humanitarian organization in the region.
