Fairchild encroachment tax, Valley incumbent Schimmels slide in new vote counts

A tax to relocate residents in a Fairchild Air Force Base’s accident potential zone lost ground Wednesday based on updated vote counts in Tuesday’s election.

After more ballots were counted Wednesday, Spokane County’s Proposition 1 was trailing by 2,273 votes, with 51.3 percent voting no. In Tuesday’s count, the measure was rejected by 51.0 percent of voters.

In another close local race, incumbent Spokane Valley City Councilman Gary Schimmels lost ground after being a mere three votes ahead of challenger Ed Pace after Tuesday’s vote count. On Wednesday, new counts brought Pace into the lead by 183 votes. Pace was carrying 50.15 percent of the vote.
