In brief: Bradley Byrne beats Dean Young in Alabama GOP runoff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Bradley Byrne won the Republican runoff in Alabama’s 1st Congressional District.

With 91 percent of the precincts reporting Tuesday night, Byrne had about 53 percent of the vote; Dean Young garnered roughly 47 percent.

Byrne was the establishment Republican candidate, drawing support from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Young ran as an outsider, aligning himself with the tea party.

Byrne advances to the general election Dec. 17 against the Democratic nominee, Mobile real estate agent Burton Leflore, in a district that has voted Republican since 1964.

Jewel thief, 83, enters plea on latest theft allegation

LOS ANGELES – Doris Payne, the 83-year-old woman with a decadeslong history of jewel thievery, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges stemming from her latest case.

Payne pleaded not guilty to one count each of second-degree burglary and grand theft, officials said.

Payne was arrested last week.
