Cate
From Staff And Wire Reports

Maurine Cate will become CEO of Deaconess Hospital in January. She arrives in Spokane after six years of leading McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center in Springfield, Ore.

Deaconess is the region’s second-largest hospital with 388 beds; it’s a centerpiece of the Rockwood integrated health system.

Cate replaces Bill Gilbert, who led Deaconess for several years as it aligned with the Rockwood Clinic, along with Valley Hospital.

“Maurine is an outstanding leader and a champion for quality patient care,” Dr. Greg Jones, Deaconess chief of staff, said in a news release. “We’re thrilled to have such an experienced, dynamic professional to lead this next era of growth for Deaconess and Rockwood Health System.”

Cargill to label ‘pink slime’ beef

NEW YORK – Cargill Inc. said it will start labeling beef products that contain finely textured beef, an ingredient that came under attack as “pink slime.”

The meat company said the new packages will appear before next year’s grilling season and is in response to consumer demand. It says packages will note when a product “Contains Finely Textured Beef.”

Finely textured beef is made of fatty bits of meat left over from other cuts that are treated to kill bacteria. The filler had been used for decades in the U.S. but started to gain negative attention after a New York Times article in 2009, in which a federal microbiologist referred to it as “pink slime.”

Service firms surge ahead

WASHINGTON – Activity at U.S. service firms accelerated in October behind a jump in sales and more hiring, suggesting businesses largely shrugged off the partial government shutdown.

The Institute for Supply Management said Tuesday that its service-sector index rose to 55.4 in October, up from 54.4 in September. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion.

The expansion at service firms echoes an ISM survey of manufacturers released last week, which showed the fastest growth at factories in 2 1/2 years.

Allrecipes magazine launches

DES MOINES, Iowa – Meredith Corp., the publisher of Better Homes and Gardens and Parents magazines, has launched Allrecipes magazine.

The new title went on sale nationwide Tuesday and is an extension of the Allrecipes.com website Meredith acquired from The Reader’s Digest Association Inc. for $175 million in 2012.

The company said the website gets more than 1 billion annual visits from women sharing recipes, reviews, photos, videos and blog posts.
