Unbeaten Pacers down Pistons behind George
NBA: Paul George scored 31 points, and the visiting Indiana Pacers remained the NBA’s only unbeaten team with a 99-91 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night.
The Pacers have matched their best start in franchise history. They are 4-0 for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
Brandon Jennings scored 17 points for the Pistons, who were done in by their 5-for-25 shooting from 3-point range.
• Harden, Howard too much for Blazers: James Harden scored 33 points, Dwight Howard added 29 points and 13 rebounds, and the visiting Houston Rockets beat the Portland Trail Blazers 116-101.
Jeremy Lin and Patrick Beverley each added 12 points for the Rockets.
Damian Lillard scored 22 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 21 to lead the Blazers, who fell after winning two in a row. Wesley Matthews added 19 points.
• Nets snap losing skid: Brook Lopez scored a game-high 27 points, Deron Williams had 10 points and eight assists and the Brooklyn Nets ended their four-game losing streak to the visiting Utah Jazz with a 104-88 victory.
• Walker scores 25 for Bobcats: Kemba Walker scored 25 points, Gerald Henderson added 18 and the visiting Charlotte Bobcats held off a late run by New York to beat the Knicks 102-97.
• Parker, Duncan power Spurs: Tony Parker scored 24 points, Tim Duncan had 17 and the San Antonio Spurs pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the host Denver Nuggets 102-94.
• Mavericks pound Lakers: Monta Ellis had 30 points and nine assists, Dirk Nowitzki was one of seven Dallas players in double figures with 11 points, and the Mavericks beat the visiting Los Angeles Lakers 123-104.
Ellis, Nowitzki’s new pick-and-roll partner, put on a show for Steve Nash, the big German’s buddy and old running mate. He was 11 of 14 from the field and made all eight of his free throws. and had just one turnover.
Nash was scoreless until the second half and finished with five points.
Oilers end losing skid
NHL: Mark Arcobello scored his second goal of the game in overtime and the Edmonton Oilers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers at Sunrise, Fla.
Edmonton went on the power play after Florida’s Scottie Upshall was called for tripping 32 seconds into the extra period, and Arcobello rifled a slap shot from the left circle that got past Florida goalie Jacob Markstrom 1:23 later.
Florida has lost six straight and nine of its past 10.
• Stars win shootout: Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley scored in a shootout against their former team and lifted the Dallas Stars a 3-2 win over the host Boston Bruins.
• Ovechkin returns with two goals: Alex Ovechkin returned from a shoulder injury to score his 11th and 12th goals of the season, and the Washington Capitals rode a second-period flurry to a 6-2 win over the New York Islanders in Washington.
• Parise connects for Wild: Zach Parise scored twice and Josh Harding continued his dominance in goal to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames at St. Paul, Minn.
Djokovic defeats Federer
Tennis: Roger Federer had never lost his opening match at the ATP World Tour Finals since the elite tournament moved to London in 2009.
Until now, that is.
On the back of a chaotic and disappointing season, the former World No. 1 was beaten for the second time in less than a week by defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-2.
The Serb extended his winning streak to 18 matches after capturing his sixth title of the season last week in Paris, where he defeated Federer in the semifinal.
Djokovic kept alive his chances of overtaking Rafael Nadal in the race for the year-end No. 1 spot.
Riess wins $8.4 million in final
Poker: A 23-year-old poker professional from Las Vegas by way of Michigan has won the World Series of Poker main event, lasting roughly 3 1/2 hours in a dramatic card session to push past his last opponent for the $8.4 million title.
Ryan Riess emerged with the title after a session that proved a showcase for his skills amid the unpredictability of no-limit Texas Hold ‘em.
Riess put his final opponent Jay Farber all-in with an Ace-King.
Bayern Munich advances
Soccer: Defending champion Bayern Munich advanced to the second round of the Champions League with a 1-0 win at Viktoria Plzen, and Manchester City reached the final 16 for the first time by beating CSKA Moscow 5-2.
Real Madrid came from behind in a 2-2 tie at Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain rallied for a 1-1 draw at Anderlecht, leaving the Spanish and French clubs on the verge of second-round berths.
