Cougars open against Roadrunners

Men’s basketball: Washington State opens its season tonight (7 p.m., Pac-12 Networks) in Beasely Coliseum against Cal State Bakersfield. The Roadrunners are looking for their first win against a Pac-12 opponent in 13 tries.

After a 93-56 pasting of Central Washington University in a preseason exhibition game, the Cougars will hope to continue the stifling defense and dominant rebounding they showed against the Wildcats. Brandon Barnes leads all returning Roadrunners with 12.1 points per game last season.

Men’s basketball: The Whitworth Pirates have been picked by coaches to again win the Northwest Conference.

The Pirates open the season Nov. 15 against Trinity in Tacoma. They received seven of nine first-place votes while Whitman was picked to finish second and Lewis & Clark was chosen third.

The Pirates under coach Matt Logie finished 26-4 each of the past two seasons and won their seventh straight NWC tournament title last year. Whitworth is seeking its eight straight trip to the NCAA Division III tournmanent.

Zag women open season with Idaho

Women’s basketball: The Gonzaga Bulldogs open their regular season tonight at 6 p.m. in the McCarthey Athletic Center against Idaho.

The Zags, 27-6 overall last season, are led by senior guard Haiden Palmer. She averaged 12.5 points last year on the team that went 15-1 in league to win the West Coast Conference.

Idaho is also playing its first game. The Vandals finished 17-16 last year and 11-7 in the Western Athletic Conference before winning the conference tournament to reach the NCAA tournament.
