For most readers, masks pose no cultural issue

Lucha Libre-inspired masks were handed out at Washington State University’s football game against Arizona State University last week. Some students protested, calling them culturally insensitive. We asked readers what they thought. Here’s what they said:

I’m Hispanic and I don’t find it offensive at all. If anything, be glad a part of your sports culture is getting integrated with US sports culture. People will find anything to be mad about. This shouldn’t be one of them.

That’s an interesting question, my first thought is no. No culture runs around in those masks as part of daily life, they are worn by wrestlers. It’s not a typical stereotype.

It doesn’t seem like they are doing it as a joke or anything. I think they look cool. I’m guessing that is what they were thinking when they thought of this idea.

Katy Smith

I think they rock.

Andrew

This is a total non story. Only 5 or so people are against this and the entire community otherwise thinks it’s awesome.

Lane

Jasper

People need to lighten up, it’s just for fun.

Jason

How, exactly, is this “culturally insensitive”? Ridiculous

Donn

They’re not culturally insensitive. It’s just a stupid idea for many other reasons, number 1 is safety.
