A Washington State Patrol trooper and two others were injured in a collision Wednesday night on Highway 395 in Stevens County, two miles south of Loon Lake, Wash.

The trooper, Jeffrey T. Evers, 32, of Colville, was headed north on Highway 395 when he initiated a U-turn and was hit by another car, a news release from the WSP said. Evers’ patrol car, a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria, was fully marked and emergency lights were activated, the release said.

Man’s arm caught in machine, severed

SEATTLE – A 55-year-old man’s left arm was severed Thursday in an industrial accident at a Seattle fortune cookie company.

Kyle Moore of the Seattle Fire Department said the arm was severed after the man became stuck in a machine up to his chest.

Moore said medics found the man conscious and alert but in a lot of pain at the Tsue Chong Co. in Seattle’s Chinatown International District, reported the Seattle Times.

Firefighters freed the man and brought him to Harborview Medical Center, along with his severed arm. Moore said they don’t know if doctors will be able to reattach the limb.

State Department of Labor & Industries spokeswoman Elaine Fischer said the fortune cookie plant doesn’t have a history of safety violations.

Fernan Lake water deemed safe again

Water in Fernan Lake is again safe for fishing, other recreation and domestic water supplies.

The Panhandle Health District has lifted an earlier blue-green algae advisory issued for the lake near Coeur d’Alene.

The algae can produce toxins harmful to people and animals. Officials from Idaho Department of Environmental Quality have been monitoring the lake, and they now confirm the concentration of the blue-green algae in Fernan Lake is no longer a health concern.

Court: Governor can revoke parole

Washington’s governor does have the authority to cancel an inmate’s parole.

That’s the holding Thursday from the state Supreme Court in a case involving a man who shot a Kennewick police officer in 1982.

Jerry Dean Lain grabbed Officer Mike Fitzpatrick’s gun and shot him twice, including once in the face. Fitzpatrick suffered serious wounds but survived; he still works in law enforcement.

Lain was sentenced to at least 20 years and up to life in prison.

A state board recommended he be granted parole in 2010, but after a campaign from Fitzpatrick and others in law enforcement, then-Gov. Chris Gregoire rejected that. Gregoire noted that Lain was deemed to be a medium to high risk to commit future crimes.

Lain sought court review, but the justices unanimously upheld the governor’s authority to overturn parole recommendations.
