Proud of statesman
I am a Spokane native who has spent most of his adult life living in Southern California. When I heard the news that Tom Foley had died, I immediately contacted my parents, who still live in Spokane, to have them send me The Spokesman-Review so I would be able to read all that was written regarding his death.
While growing up in Spokane, I felt that Foley did a wonderful job representing the 5th Congressional District in the House of Representatives. Like many others, I am sure, I felt pride when a congressman from Eastern Washington rose to be House speaker in 1989.
Jim Camden’s Oct. 19 and Oct. 20 stories in the Spokesman put it so well in characterizing Tom Foley as a “statesman.” How sad that most of those who hold office today no longer conduct themselves in the same dignified manner.
