Roundup: Mead claims state tournament berth

The Mead girls soccer team won its third straight game on Saturday, edging Chiawana 2-1 in a 4A regional game in Kennewick.

The win gave the Panthers (15-3) the second and final seed to the state tournament, which starts Monday.

Mead made it to the quarterfinals of last year’s state tournament before falling 1-0 to Camas.

Kamiakin 2, Mt. Spokane 1: Ellie Heiden scored in the 88th minute and the Braves edged the Wildcats (12-5) in the 3A regional title match at Lampson Stadium in Kennewick. The win gave Kamiakin the top seed heading into the state tournament. Mt. Spokane is the second seed.

Brittney Sanders gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with her 23rd-minute goal, but the Braves tied it at 1 in the 66th minute before Heiden’s game-winner. Mt. Spokane will host Southridge in the first round on Tuesday at Spokane Falls Community College.

Southridge 2, University 0: Mercedes Haberling and McKaley Goffard scored second-half goals to lead the Suns past the visiting Titans (10-7) in a 3A regional elimination match. Southridge claimed the third seed to state and University was eliminated.

Newport 3, Okanogan 2: Sydney Hearnden scored her second goal of the game in the 89th minute to give the Grizzlies a win over the Bulldogs in a 1A bi-district elimination match in Newport. Newport’s Holly Malsbury scored in the 23rd minute and Hearnden scored her first goal in the 34th minute. The teams were tied at 2 at the half. The win gave Newport a berth into the state tournament.

Lakeside 7, Tonasket 0: Ashley Cook Cox and Callie Best scored two goals apiece to guide the Eagles (15-1) past the Tigers in a 1A bi-district game in Nine Mile Falls. Lakeside earned a spot in the state tournament.

Cascade 3, Freeman 0: The Kodiaks blanked the Scotties (7-9) in a 1A bi-district elimination match in Leavenworth.

Boys soccer

St. George’s 4, Northwest Christian 1: Erik Muelheims scored twice in each half to lift the Dragons (17-0) past the Crusaders (7-9) in the 2B/1B regional championship game at St. George’s. Both teams move on to the state tournament.

Waitsburg-Prescott 4, Valley Christian 0: Ernesto Valdovinos scored twice as the Cardinals beat the Panthers in Prescott to claim the third seed to state.

Football

Fruitland 35, Timberlake 21: The Grizzlies scored 21 second-quarter points and held on in the second half to beat the Tigers (6-4) in an Idaho 3A quarterfinal game at Spirit Lake.

Timberlake’s Preston Rhodes caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score.

Homedale 67, Bonners Ferry 0: The Badgers (5-5) were eliminated from the Idaho 3A state playoffs after falling to the host Trojans.

Prairie 46, Wallace 0: The Pirates blanked the host Miners and elimiated Wallace (9-1) from the Idaho 1A Division I playoffs.

Salmon River 56, Kootenai 6: The Savages dumped the Warriors (6-4) in Harrison and eliminated Kootenai from the Idaho 1A Division II playoffs.
