This photo was taken shortly after the battle for Nijmegen, Holland, where thousands of Allied paratroopers dropped in during Operation Market Garden on Sept. 17, 1944, to take the bridge, seen in the background, over the River Waal. The Allies secured the bridge and cleared the Germans from the town and surrounding area.

This photo shot by a military photographer shows thousands of paratroopers preparing to board hundreds of C-47 cargo planes to begin Operation Market Garden on Sept. 17, 1944, during an effort to break through the Siegfried Line and create a new angle of attack into Germany.
