Hartley helps Connecticut over Stanford
Women’s basketball: Bria Hartley had 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists to help No. 1 Connecticut to a 76-57 win over No. 3 Stanford (1-1) on Monday in Storrs, Conn.
Kiah Stokes added 10 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks for the Huskies (2-0), who got a scare early in the second half when preseason All-American Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis went down after landing awkwardly on her right arm trying for a rebound. UConn coach Geno Auriemma wasn’t sure how badly his star was hurt.
Napier guides UConn to win over Yale
Men’s basketball: Shabazz Napier put up the 10th triple-double in UConn history, leading lead No. 19 Connecticut to an 80-62 win over in-state rival Yale (1-1).
Napier finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for Connecticut (2-0).
Howard, Houston outlasts Toronto
NBA: Jeremy Lin scored 31 points off the bench, Dwight Howard had 18 points and 24 rebounds, and the Houston Rockets held off the Toronto Raptors 110-104 in double-OT.
James Harden had 26 points and 10 assists for Houston.
• Indiana stays unbeaten: Paul George scored 23 points and Lance Stephenson had the first triple-double of his career, leading the perfect Indiana Pacers (8-0) to a 95-79 win over Memphis in Indianapolis.
• Bradley leads Celtics over Magic: Avery Bradley scored 24 points as the host Boston Celtics beat the Orlando Magic 120-105.
Kelly Olynyk, Jordan Crawford and Jeff Green each had 16 points for Boston.
• Lakers’ Nash sidelined: Steve Nash, the NBA’s oldest player at 39, will be out of the Los Angeles Lakers’ lineup for at least two weeks with nerve root irritation. He is expected to receive an epidural block today. He will be evaluated in 10 days.
Braves to build new home in Cobb County
Baseball: The Braves are leaving Atlanta’s Turner Field and moving into a new 42,000-seat, $672 million stadium complex in Cobb County in 2017.
Braves executives John Schuerholz, Mike Plant and Derek Schiller said the team decided not to seek another 20-year lease at Turner Field, which was built for the 1996 Summer Olympics before being converted in to a baseball park in 1997, and began talks with the Cobb Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority in July.
• Multiple free agents reject offers: Seattle’s Kendrys Morales and the Boston Red Sox trio of Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Napoli and Stephen Drew were among 13 free agents who turned down $14.1 million qualifying offers from their former teams.
In two years of the new system, all 22 players given qualifying offers have said no.
Djokovic claims ATP Finals title in London
Tennis: Defending champion Novak Djokovic made quick work of top-ranked Rafael Nadal, 6-3, 6-4, to win the ATP World Tour Finals in London, extending his winning streak to 22 matches and claiming the elite season-ending title for the third time.
Djokovic has not lost a match since his defeat to Nadal in the U.S. Open final.
Nadal hit only nine winners and was broken three times.
David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco defeated top-ranked Mike and Bob Bryan 7-5, 6-7 (3), 10-7 to win the doubles title.
Lightning’s Stamkos removed from ice
Miscellany: Tampa Bay center Steven Stamkos was taken off the ice on a stretcher with a broken right tibia after crashing into the post during the second period of the Boston Bruins’ 3-0 NHL win over the visiting Lightning. GM Steve Yzerman said Stamkos is expected to have surgery today.
• Stockholm makes bid for 2022 Olympics: The Swedish Olympic Committee said it has submitted a bid to the International Olympic Committee on behalf of Stockholm for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
