People: Soldiers preparing for South Pole race

A team of wounded U.S. service members is in London this week for a publicity tour before starting a fundraising race to the South Pole with Britain’s Prince Harry.

The U.S. team is organized by the Colorado group Soldiers to Summits. Director Jason Eckman said team members were among the thousands who marched in London’s Remembrance Sunday parade.

They’ll leave Sunday to head to Antarctica to compete against teams of wounded service personnel from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Prince Harry will race with the U.K. team. “True Blood” actor Alexander Skarsgård will race with the Americans on the 208-mile trek.

Bodyguard cleared in confrontation

Singer Patti LaBelle’s bodyguard has been acquitted of misdemeanor assault in a confrontation with a drunken West Point cadet at a Houston airport terminal.

A Harris County jury returned its verdict Monday clearing Efrem Holmes in the 2011 confrontation with Richard King at a Bush Intercontinental Airport terminal.

According to trial evidence, King had a blood-alcohol level almost 3 1/2 times above the Texas legal threshold for intoxication and didn’t remember what happened the day of the incident. According to testimony and surveillance video, King approached a limousine containing LaBelle and verbally abused the performer when her son tried to block his way. King punched him, and Holmes sprang up and punched King several times.

King filed a lawsuit against the singer and Holmes. LaBelle countersued.

ABC’s Robach has breast cancer

ABC News correspondent Amy Robach said she has breast cancer, a month after she was given a mammogram on the air for a “Good Morning America” story.

Robach said Monday she’ll have both breasts surgically removed Thursday.

She was asked by producers to have the mammogram for a story because she was 40, an age where women are encouraged to be more vigilant checking for breast cancer. She said a doctor told her the mammogram saved her life.

Robach was a frequent fill-in on ABC’s morning show while Robin Roberts was fighting a serious blood and bone marrow disease.
