CORRECTION: Following publication of this story, the Idaho Panhandle National Forest issued a correction to an earlier news release on this topic. Each family may purchase up to three permits to take trees from those forest lands, not five as originally reported.


With Thanksgiving around the corner, federal agencies are starting to advertise Christmas tree permits. “Save money, get outside and enjoy the crisp winter air,” Colville National Forest spokesman Franklin Pemberton wrote in a news release. If you want to start a new family tradition with a fresh-cut tree from federal forest lands, here’s what you need to know:
