Two Cougars named Pac-12’s best

 Women’s soccer: Washington State senior Micaela Castain was voted Pac-12 Player of the Year on Tuesday after leading the conference in points (33) and assists (11) for the 2013 season.

The midfielder, who also tied for the Pac-12 lead in goals at 11, is the first Cougar to win the award.

Also, coach Keidane McAlpine was picked as the Pac-12 Coach of the Year after leading WSU to its third straight NCAA postseason appearance for the first time and to second place in conference, the Cougars highest finish in the Pac-10/12 era.

NCAA: WSU hosts Illinois at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Vandals get early test in Sooners

College Basketball: The Idaho Vandals travel to Norman, Okla., today to play the undefeated University of Oklahoma.

The Sooners, 2-0 on the season, are riding the hot hand of Buddy Hield. The 6-foot-4 sophomore scored a career-high 23 points on Monday in a 13-point win over North Texas. He also led OU in their opener with 19 points against Alabama.

Idaho is 1-0 after winning against Western Illinois in Moscow on Saturday. Stephen Madison’s double-double (21 points, 14 rebounds) paced UI.

Stars put F Whitney on injured list

NHL: The Dallas Stars have placed Ray Whitney on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.

The 41-year-old Whitney has played in all 17 games and is third on the team with seven assists. The forward is third among active players with 1,278 games and sixth in points with 1,040.

The former Spokane Chief (1988-1991) was injured in a 5-2 loss to the Blackhawks on Saturday.

Whitney was selected in the second round by San Jose in the 1991 NHL Draft after helping the Chiefs claim the Memorial Cup that year.
