NCAA football around the nation: Rushing record falls by wayside once again

Cartel Brooks of Division III Heidelberg University ran for 465 yards, setting an all-division NCAA record, in a 42-14 win over Baldwin Wallace on Saturday in Berea, Ohio.

The record was held by Western Connecticut’s Octavias McKoy, who piled up 455 yards rushing against Worcester State on Oct. 26. Prior to McKoy’s record-setting performance, Dante Brown of Marietta’s mark of 441 yards stood since 1996.

Brooks carried the ball 38 times and scored on runs of 81, 41 and 13 yards.

Boise State 48, Wyoming 7: Jay Ajayi rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Grant Hedrick threw for three more scores to lead the Broncos (7-3, 5-1 Mountain West) over the Cowboys (4-6, 2-4) in Boise.

Penn State 45, Purdue 21: Zach Zwinak ran for three TDs and Allen Robinson set Penn State’s single-season receptions mark with 78, leading the Nittany Lions (6-4, 3-3 Big Ten) over the Boilermakers (1-9, 0-6) in State College, Pa.

Colorado State 66, New Mexico 42: Kapri Bibbs ran for 291 yards and six TDs to break the Colorado State record and match the Mountain West mark, and Garrett Grayson threw three scoring passes to help the Rams (6-5, 4-2) beat the Lobos (3-7, 1-5) in Albuquerque, N.M.

Navy 42, South Alabama 14: Darius Staten had a career-high 127 yards on seven carries with a TD to help the Midshipmen (6-4) beat the Bengals (3-6) in Annapolis, Md., and become bowl-eligible for the 10th time in 11 years.

North Dakota State 35, Youngstown State 17: Brock Jensen threw for four TDs and ran for another to lead the Bison (10-0, 7-0) to their third straight Missouri Valley Conference title with a victory over the Penguins (8-3, 5-2) in Youngstown, Ohio.

Maryland 27, Virginia Tech 24 (OT): C.J. Brown ran for 122 yards, including a TD in overtime, and the Terrapins (6-4, 2-4 ACC) beat the Hokies (7-4, 4-3) in Blacksburg, Va.

Kansas 31, West Virginia 7: James Sims rushed for 211 yards and three TDs and the Jayhawks (3-7, 1-6) snapped a 27-game Big 12 losing streak by beating the Mountaineers (4-7, 2-6) in Lawrence, Kan.

Vanderbilt 22, Kentucky 6: Brian Kimbrow scored on a 21-yard run, and Vanderbilt (6-4, 3-4 SEC) beat the Wildcats (2-8, 0-6) in Nashville, Tenn., becoming bowl eligible.
