Obituary: Alderson, Frederick K.

Age 88

ALDERSON, Frederick K. (Age 88) Colonel Alderson, who died on November 7, 2013, was born in Spokane on September 27, 1925, the son of Joe and Elsie Alderson.

He grew up on the family ranch near Wilbur.

Following graduation from Wilbur High School in 1943, Fred entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY; graduated three years later and began a military career that spanned 24 years.

Shortly after graduation he returned to Wilbur to marry his high school sweetheart, Barbara Gyorfi.

His early assignments included two tours in Japan and one in Korea.

Many of these assignments were with airborne units.

After graduation from the Command and General Staff College in 1955, Fred Spent two years with the Army’s Airborne test unit at Fort Bragg, NC, and then four years on the facility at West Point.

After a tour of duty in France, Fred returned to the States and was selected to attend the Air War College where he took additional course work at George Washington University, and was awarded a Master’s Degree in International Affairs.

His final Army assignment was at the Pentagon where he was assigned to the office of the Secretary of the Army and dealt primarily with congressional matters.

He retired as a Colonel in 1969.

Colonel Alderson immediately began a second career focusing on congressional relations.

He served a number of years with the U.S. House of Representatives as a Principal Congressional Assistant.

He later became a Washington lobbyist for an Arizona electric utility company.

Fred and Barbara returned to the Inland Northwest in 1994 and became residents of Spokane.

Mrs. Alderson passed away on May 9, 2001.

Colonel Alderson is survived by his son, Fred Jr. and his wife Margaret of Scottsdale, AZ; two grandchildren, Kelly and Jeb Alderson; and one sister, Virginia Allred of Seattle, WA.

A second sister, Joanne Costello, passed away in 2010.

A service of Remembrance will be held for Colonel Frederick K. Alderson at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, November 19th, 2013 at the Rockwood Retirement Community located at 2903 E. 25th Avenue, Spokane, WA.
