Rose elevates Bulls over Hibbert, Pacers
NBA: Luol Deng scored 23 points, Derrick Rose added 20 points and the Chicago Bulls knocked off the NBA’s last unbeaten team with a 110-94 win over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night in Chicago.
Taj Gibson had 15 points and eight rebounds for Chicago, which won its fourth straight game behind 11-of-19 shooting from 3-point range.
Roy Hibbert led Indiana with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
• Heat continue streak against Bobcats: LeBron James scored 30 points to help visiting Miami beat Charlotte for the 13th straight time, 97-81.
The four-time MVP was 13 of 18 from the field and had seven assists in his eighth 20-point game this season.
• Howard propels Rockets: Dwight Howard scored 18 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, including 13 of 19 free throws in a 21/2-minute stretch, to lead Houston’s 122-111 victory over the Nuggets at Denver.
Chandler Parsons added 20 points and James Harden had 17 for the Rockets, who never trailed and led by as many as 23.
• Wolves thump Celtics: Kevin Love had 23 points and 12 rebounds and Nikola Pekovic had 20 points and 12 boards to lead Minnesota to a 106-88 victory over Boston at Minneapolis. Kelly Olynyk had six points and two rebounds for Boston. Also, Blake Griffin had 30 points and 12 rebounds, J.J. Redick added 26 points and the Los Angeles Clippers rallied to beat the Brooklyn Nets 110-103, improving to 5-0 at home. … Klay Thompson scored 25 points, Andre Iguodala had 16 points and six rebounds and the Golden State Warriors built a big lead before holding off the Utah Jazz 102-88 in Oakland, Calif.
Men’s basketball: Shannon Scott and Sam Thompson scored 13 points apiece, helping No. 10 Ohio State pull away from cold-shooting No. 17 Marquette for a 52-35 win in Milwaukee.
Aaron Craft added 10 points for the Buckeyes, who ended the Golden Eagles’ 27-game home winning streak, second-longest in the nation.
• Shockers outlast Tennessee State: Tekele Cotton scored 18 points to lead Wichita State past Tennessee State 85-71 in Wichita, Kan.
Rangers break through in Montreal
NHL: Ryan Callahan ended New York’s four-year-old goal drought in Montreal and rookie Cam Talbot made 22 saves for his first NHL shutout in the Rangers’ 1-0 blanking of the Canadiens.
Callahan scored his sixth goal of the season for New York, which has won eight of its past 11 games.
• Jagr nets two in Penguins’ win: Jaromir Jagr scored two goals and Martin Brodeur made 27 saves to lead New Jersey over Pittsburgh 4-1 in Newark, N.J.
Andy Greene and Adam Larsson also scored for New Jersey, which has won three of its past five.
Chris Kunitz scored for Pittsburgh. The Penguins have lost four of six. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 18 of 21 shots.
St. Pierre wins via split decision
MMA: Georges St. Pierre retained his welterweight title with a split decision over top contender Johny Hendricks in UFC 167 at Las Vegas.
Hendricks seemed to have the upper hand over the Canadian champion for most of the five rounds, landing the more significant blows and limiting any damage inflicted.
St. Pierre was able to keep it close to extend his winning streak to 12 fights. Two judges scored it 48-47 for St. Pierre, and the third had it 48-47 for Hendricks.
In the co-main event, former lightweight contender Rashad Evans stopped Chael Sonnen in the first round.
Thompson closes in on another victory
Golf: Lexi Thompson moved into position for her second victory in her last four starts, taking the third-round lead in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The 18-year-old Thompson shot a 5-under 67 to reach 13-under 203 at Guadalajara Country Club. She had a one-stroke lead over South Korea’s I.K. Kim.
Thompson won the 2011 LPGA Navistar Classic at 16, and took the LPGA Malaysia last month for her second tour title.
• OHL Classic suspended: Harris English and Robert Karlsson shared the lead in the rain-delayed OHL Classic in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, when third-round play was suspended because of darkness.
English and Karlsson were 15 under overall with 11 holes left in the round.
• Stenson closes fast to take lead: Henrik Stenson closed in on the European Tour money title, birdieing four of the last five holes to take a one-shot lead in the season-ending World Tour Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Trying to become the first player to win the FedEx Cup and European title in the same year, the Swede finished with a 5-under 67 to reach 17-under 199 on Jumeriah’s Earth Course.
Czechs take lead with doubles victory
Tennis: The Czech Republic is one victory from winning a second straight Davis Cup.
The defending champions defeated Serbia in doubles for a 2-1 lead in the Davis Cup final in Belgrade, Serbia, when Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek beat Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (4). The victory by the Czech pair on the indoor hard court at Belgrade Arena improved their Davis Cup doubles record to 14-1.
Chan wins another Trophee Bompard
Figure skating: Three-time world champion Patrick Chan left the ice to a deafening standing ovation after another near-faultless performance in the free skate helped the Canadian win the Trophee Bompard in Paris for the fourth time.
Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu was second ahead of American Jason Brown.
Shiffrin wins WCup slalom opener
Miscellany: American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin easily won the World Cup slalom opener at Levi, Finland, beating reigning Olympic champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany by more than a second to send an immediate message to her rivals ahead of the Sochi Games.
The 18-year-old slalom world champion led by half a second after the first run and raced seamlessly at the top of the hill in the second to extend her advantage, overcoming a mistake near the end to clock a combined time of 1 minute, 55.07 seconds.
• Rutgers player quits after coach’s verbal abuse: Rutgers is dealing with another issue involving a coach’s treatment of a player. A football player has left the team after alleging that a coach verbally abused him and threatened to head-butt him during a spring study hall session.
