SMU holds off Eastern

Hayley Hodgins was 5 for 9 on 3-pointers and the Eagles women finished with 11– three shy of the school-record 14 – but Eastern Washington (0-2) was unable to hold off undefeated, Southern Methodist University (3-0) of the American Athletic Conference 75-70 at Reese Court.

Hodgins and Laura Hughes led the Eagles offensively with 19 points each. The Eagles make the short trip to Gonzaga Wednesday with tipoff at 6 p.m.

St. Thomas (Minn.) 76, Whitworth 61: In the final game of the Whit Classic, Whitworth fell to fifth-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.) at Spokane. Both teams finished the Classic 1-1. The Pirates were led by KC McConnell with 20 points and Kayla Johnson with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Pirates will travel to UC-Santa Cruz on Friday to open against the host team in the Hampton Inn Classic at 5:30 p.m.

Idaho 62, Loyola-Chicago 60: The Vandals concluded the Preseason WNIT with a victory over Loyola Chicago on a layup by Christina Salvatore right before the final buzzer. The Vandals (2-1) were led by Stacey Barr with 21 points.

Following a leg injury in Friday night’s win, Barr was not medically cleared to play until immediately prior to tip- off.

The Vandals will open their home season next Saturday at 2 p.m. against UC Irvine.

Hawaii 77, Washington State 66: Lia Galdeira scored 29 points and added nine rebounds for the Cougars (2-1) Friday at the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Classic.

West Virginia 88, Washington State 66: Junior Tia Presley was 5 of 8 from the field en route to 16 points to lead the Cougars. The Mountaineers shot 56.4 percent from the field. The Cougars (1-3) will finish the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic today against Ole Miss at 4:30 p.m.
