Thunderbirds hold off Bobcats
Quarterback Aaron Cantu ran for two touchdowns Saturday night to give Southern Utah enough of a lead to hold off a late rally by Montana State and win 22-14 in Bozeman.
Cantu threw for just 88 yards and only ran for six, but was able to score two of Southern Utah’s three TDs, both off a 1-yard rush. Chris Robinson scored the other TD for the Thunderbirds with a 5-yard run in the final minute before the half.
The Bobcats, who were held to 87 yards rushing, didn’t score until the fourth quarter.
Montana 42, Weber St. 6: Jordan Canada rushed for a career-high 189 yards and two TDs to lead the Grizzlies past the Wildcats in Missoula.
The Grizzlies piled up 461 yards of total offense, with John Nguyen, Marlon Miles and Shay Smithwick-Hann each rushing for a TD.
Northern Arizona 24, Northern Colorado 7: Randy Hale Jr. returned an interception 51 yards for a score and Zach Bauman rushed for 144 yards to lead the Lumberjacks to a win over the Bears in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Jesse Bradley caught five passes for 94 yards and a touchdown for NAU.
Sacramento St. 43, Portland St. 42: Garret Safron passed for 554 yards and three second-half TDs and the Hornets rallied from a 14-point deficit, beating the Vikings in Portland, Ore.
Sac State dominated the second half, scoring five TDs. Safron completed 68 percent of his passes and four TD throws for the game, including two in the final 7 minutes. He also ran for two scores.
BYU 59, Idaho St. 13: Jamaal Williams ran for 131 yards and three TDs – Adam Hine added 141 and a score – as the Cougars dismantled the Bengals in Provo, Utah.
BYU (7-3) had 578 total yards of offense and rushed for 421 and five touchdowns.
The 59 points were the Cougars’ most since a 59-21 win over UNLV in 2009.
UC Davis 34, North Dakota 18: Gabe Manzanares rushed for 147 yards and three TDs and Brady Stuart kicked four field goals as the Aggies won their home finale, beating North Dakota.
Greg Hardin caught 11 passes for 179 yards for North Dakota, but had a costly fumble that helped the Aggies score 12 straight points.
