Rivera says he accepts A-Rod’s claims of innocence

NEW YORK (AP) — Mariano Rivera says he believes Alex Rodriguez is innocent.

The retired Yankees reliever says he’ll willing to accept the word of the three-time AL MVP, who insists he hasn’t taken any performance-enhancing drugs since joining the team in 2004.

Rodriguez is trying to overturn a 211-game suspension.

Rivera says Rodriguez is his friend and if the star slugger tells him something, he’s “definitely” going to believe it.

Rivera spoke at an event Thursday arranged by New Era that saw a Manhattan street outside the MLB Fan Cave renamed “Mariano Rivera Way” for the day.
