3A quarterfinal
Shadle Park vs. Kamiakin
Saturday: At Lampson Stadium, Kennewick, 2 p.m.
Records: Highlanders (10-1), Braves (9-2)
How they got here: Shadle stymied Mt. Spokane and Kamiakin cruised past Columbia River in openers last week.
What’s at stake: Winner advances to a semifinal matchup with Bellevue vs. Peninsula winner.
At a glance: Kamiakin’s lone losses were tight setbacks to 4A teams Chiawana and Richland, both of which are still playing. Early in the year Kamiakin featured the pass behind two-year starter Kylle Robertson. Last week, the Braves pounded the ball with running back Umid Ramizov, who rushed 35 times for 197 yards. Kamiakin coach Scott Biglin said his team’s offensive approach is to take what team’s give the Braves because they believe they can run or pass equally well. If Kamiakin’s defense has a chink, it’s in the secondary. And that wouldn’t bode well for the Braves against Brett Rypien and company. What it comes down to is Shadle must contain the run and Kamiakin must contain the pass.
1A quarterfinal
Freeman vs. Royal
Saturday: At Lions Field, Moses Lake, 1 p.m.
Records: Scotties (11-0), Knights (8-3)
How they got here: Freeman thumped River View, which finished second and one spot ahead of Royal in league, and Royal shut out Riverside.
What’s at stake: Winner advances to a semifinal matchup with Okanogan vs. Cashmere winner.
At a glance: The Scotties are rolling and not even perennial playoff qualifier Royal should get in the way. Royal could be Freeman’s most difficult test since early in the season. Freeman will use its talented running game behind a sizeable line to control the game.
2B quarterfinals
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague vs. Colfax
Friday: At Cheney, 7 p.m.
Records: Broncos (10-0), Bulldogs (6-4)
How they got here: LRS had no difficulty dispatching DeSales and Colfax won a big road game at White Swan.
What’s at stake: Winner advances to a semifinal matchup with Reardan vs. Adna winner.
At a glance: LRS easily handled Colfax when the game had to be made up on a Tuesday, the week of the crossover games. Young Colfax will use this as a springboard into next season while the Broncos will use this as a springboard into the semifinals.
Reardan vs. Adna
Saturday: At Centralia, 1 p.m.
Records: Indians (8-2), Pirates (8-3)
How they got here: Reardan defeated Oroville and Adna topped Waitsburg-Prescott.
What’s at stake: Winner advances to a semifinal matchup with Lind-Ritzville/Sprague vs. Colfax winner.
At a glance: Adna has won eight straight since opening the season 0-3. Adna features a ground-munching wishbone attack. Both teams thrive on ball control. The key could be Reardan’s defense, which has carried the Indians this season.
1B quarterfinals
Cusick vs. Neah Bay
Saturday: At Silverdale, 1 p.m.
Records: Panthers (8-2), Red Devils (9-0)
How they got here: Cusick upset defending state champ Liberty Christian in a crossover game and Neah Bay cruised to a league title.
What’s at stake: Winner advances to a semifinal matchup with Lummi vs. Wishkah Valley winner.
At a glance: These teams were scheduled to play a nonleague game in September, but at the time Cusick only had eight eligible players because of the late arrival of athletes involved in harvest work. Neah Bay was state runner-up last year so Cusick has a chance in back-to-back weeks to knock off last year’s top two finishers. Coach Sonny Finley’s crew is looking forward to the challenge.
Touchet vs. Wilbur-Creston
Saturday: At West Valley, 1 p.m.
Records: Indians (10-1), Wildcats (10-1)
How they got here: Third-ranked W-C defeated Selkirk and No. 2-ranked Touchet downed Odessa-Harrington in crossovers.
What’s at stake: Winner advances to a semifinal matchup with Rosalia vs. Colton winner.
At a glance: This isn’t breaking news considering it’s eight-man football, but this should be a track meet. The teams have three common opponents – O-H, LaCrosse-Washtucna and Colton. W-C quarterback Trystan Rosman has completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,226 yards and 39 touchdowns.
Rosalia vs. Colton
Friday: At Clarkston, 7 p.m.
Records: Spartans (8-2), Wildcats (8-2)
How they got here: Rosalia defeated Republic and Colton handled Entiat.
What’s at stake: Winner advances to a semifinal matchup with Touchet vs. Wilbur-Creston winner.
At a glance: Both teams had no difficulty beating St. John-Endicott and Garfield-Palouse, their two common opponents. Rosalia had to play an independent schedule, dropping from 2B after splitting away from Tekoa-Oakesdale.
